Mudroom lockers are now commonplace in new single-family homes – they provide a central area for coats, shoes, boots, jackets, hats, and backpacks. They go by many names including “mudroom cubbies”, “laundry room lockers”, “entryway lockers”, “family drop zone”, “hall trees”, “hall tree cabinets”, and “family lockers”. They usually are separated into three sections – the bottom is for shoe storage, the middle is for hanging coats and jackets, and the top is for hats and purses. They usually are made of solid wood and most have a bench that can double as a place to sit when putting on your shoes.
When we renovated the laundry room in our home, The Arched Manor, we removed two hall closets and formed the perfect inset space for mudroom lockers. We decided to build ours by hand so that it had a custom, built-in look. You can read all about that process in this blog post. Also, we wrote another related blog post about things to consider when designing your mudroom locker and many of those things are applicable to pre-built units as well.
However, if you are not handy or would rather just purchase a pre-made locker system, there are several good options out there. We scoured the web and found five great choices in various price points and quality levels and compared many factors that will help you find the best one for your space!
What is your ceiling height and width? This will help determine how tall of a unit you need and how many lockers (hall trees) you need!
Do you prefer drawers for your shoes? cabinet doors over your lockers? Or a hat cubby? Determining what your preferences are will help you find the ideal unit.
Many units can be customized (width, height, color, etc.) so keep that in mind as you shop. If you need a certain amount of locker bays, see if they can be purchased individually to get the exact number you need.
How quickly do you need them? Many can be delivered in a week while others may take 5 months!
Being able to return the lockers or hall tree unit if you don't like it is a huge benefit, but usually not an option for custom made units.
We like the styling of the Jesse Mudroom Lockers and the drawers beneath the bench are perfect for hiding the shoes and boots, and they have magnetic closures. Two colors are offered (distressed white and distressed gray) and they are sold in sets of three.
A set of two double prong hooks are in each cubby for maximum hanging potential. These units also have potential to look more custom by not assembling the feet on the bottom and instead building a platform for them to secure to. Baseboard molding can be applied to the bottom and crown molding installed at the top.
These units do not have the upper storage cubby for hats, and the units themselves are fairly short – only 67.6 inches, so for spaces with shorter ceilings (8 or 9 feet), it should be fine. However, for large height ceilings, they may seem too short.
Overall, these have a high bang-for-your-buck factor, and the free shipping and short delivery time from Wayfair are hard to beat
The vertical shiplap on the back and drawer-fronts give a country feel to these Farmhouse ivory white mudroom lockers. The wood bench gives warmth to this unit and the six hooks and bottom drawers give plenty of storage and organization. This unit is well sized at 76” and 18” deep and is sold in a set of three. No hat cubby on the top, but items could be placed on the top of the unit (or in baskets that go on the top shelf).
One drawback to this unit is that it is not ideal if you need more than three lockers. You will see on the ends that there are panels, and if you place two units next to each other, there will be two side panels stacked next to each other, which won’t look as consistent as some of the other mudroom locker units.
Offered in two beautiful colors, this Nolan Mudroom Locker set is a modern take on entryway cubbies. Clean lines, modern hooks, and metal legs give this West Elm unit a sophisticated, simplistic vibe. This unit has cabinet doors to hide shoes and boots and has a top cubby to hold hats and purses. Engineered wood construction and no assembly required make this an appealing choice for a quality mudroom locker unit.
One big advantage to these units is that they are also sold individually, so if you need a specific number of lockers, this style would be a good fit. Also, there are many other complimentary pieces to the Nolan Collection (including closets, benches, shoe shelves, etc.) so that you can customize your mudroom lockers to include the pieces you need.
The Wade Entryway Hall Tree Set is made of hand-made with solid pine and gives a high-end look at a descent price-point. This mudroom locker style is offered in two colors, weathered pine and black. The warm lacquer finish on the weathered pine wood is inviting and durable, and gives a rustic, worldly feel to the space. The black color is rich with just a hint of modern with it’s monochromatic black hardware.
The drawers on the bottom feature English dovetail joints, and the bottom feet have adjustable levelers to they can be level on uneven floors. Kiln-dried wood helps prevent warping, splitting, cracking and developing mildew. What this all means is that you are getting a quality piece of furniture that will last for years to come!
The Wade Hall Tree is also sold as a separate single unit, and other options in the Wade Collection are available to compliment the hall trees and create a custom look!
The Georgian Mudroom Locker is the most expensive option we recommend, but by far the most customizable and the highest-quality mudroom locker available. Each unit is made-to-order and every piece of this unit can be customizable. Want a mahogany bench with antique brass hardware? No problem! Want a particular color?
The woodshop that makes these units is called Speck Custom Woodwork and they sell their products through Etsy. Their reviews are outstanding – most talk about the outstanding quality and the awesome customer service.
They can match any Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams color, or any other sample that you send. This piece is made with solid maple drawers with top-of-the-line Blum Blumotion soft-close hardware, inset doors, and a strong lacquer finish.
In addition to the Georgia model here, they offer many other styles of mudroom locker on their Etsy storefront. Below are a few of their other designs that we really like as well. The lead time is long – 5 months, the quality is by far the best, and their price is the highest, but if you are looing for the best option to look like it is a custom built-in unit, this is it!
