    What Are Blackstone Griddles?

Blackstone griddles are outdoor cooking stations that provide a versatile and convenient way to prepare a variety of delicious meals. They are known for their griddle top that allows for non-stress cooking and easy cleanup.

One key feature of Blackstone griddles is their independent heat controls, which give you the flexibility to cook different foods simultaneously at various temperatures. This means you can easily cook pancakes on one side and bacon on the other without any hassle.

The addition of side shelves offers a convenient space to store your cooking tools, spices, and plates, making the entire cooking process more organized and efficient.

With a large cooking space, Blackstone griddles are perfect for hosting outdoor gatherings and cooking for a group of people. The versatility they offer allows you to create a wide range of dishes, from breakfast favorites to stir-fries and grilled veggies.

Regarding cleanup, Blackstone griddles shine with their easy-to-clean surfaces, making post-cooking maintenance a breeze. This hassle-free cleaning process means you can spend less time scrubbing and more time enjoying your delicious creations with friends and family. Plus, the seasoned flavor on all 612 square inches of steel gives your food flavor that you just don’t get on a traditional grill!

    Why Are They Popular?

Blackstone griddles have gained popularity due to their ability to create truly epic meals for the entire crowd with professional results. They offer independent cooking zones, allowing users to prepare different dishes simultaneously.

The versatility of Blackstone griddles is another key factor driving their widespread appeal. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast feast, a sizzling stir-fry for lunch, or a BBQ extravaganza for dinner, these griddles can handle it all with finesse.

The ease of cooking for a large gathering with a Blackstone griddle cannot be overstated. Instead of dealing with multiple pans and burners, you can effortlessly whip up a variety of dishes on a spacious, flat-top cooking surface.

The ability to mimic restaurant-quality cooking on a Blackstone griddle is a game-changer. Achieving that perfect sear on a steak or the ideal caramelization on veggies is made simple, ensuring that every meal you prepare is a culinary delight.

Comparison of 36-inch and 28-inch Blackstone Griddles

A few years agon, I received a 28″ Blackstone Griddle as a gift for Father’s day – I had been eying one for months, and Megan made it happen.  It was a great way to get my feet wet with griddle cooking, which is very different than using a traditional grill.  In the three years I had that grill, there were some things I loved, and some things I didn’t love…which drove me to upgrading to the 36 inch version this year. I’ll go over these items in detail below, but spoiler alert…the 36 inch grill is truly awesome and I highly recommend that over the 28 inch version.

When comparing the 36-inch and 28-inch Blackstone griddles, it’s essential to consider factors like size, cooking space, weight, portability, and price to determine the best fit for your outdoor cooking needs.

    Assembly

The process to assemble the Blackstone 28″ griddle is very similar to assembling the 36″ griddle.  The instructions are clear and all the parts are labeled well and easy to find. The 36″ griddle box is very heavy, and I recommend having another person help you move the box to the area you are assembling it.  For ours, we assembled it on our back patio, very close to where it will permanently reside.

    Size and Cooking Space

The size of a Blackstone griddle is crucial for accommodating large gatherings or parties. If you need to cook 10 packs of hot dogs, you are going to need a gas griddle, in this case liquid propane, with all the space you can get! The square inches of cooking space determine how much food you can cook at once, making it easier to feed a crowd.

When selecting a Blackstone griddle, paying attention to its dimensions ensures that you have enough room to prepare multiple dishes simultaneously. Whether you are hosting a backyard barbecue, a picnic, or a family reunion, having ample cooking space enables you to efficiently cook for a sizable group. An expansive cooking surface not only saves time but also allows you to offer a diverse menu, catering to varied tastes and preferences. A large griddle size offers flexibility in cooking techniques, from searing meats to sautéing vegetables, enhancing the overall culinary experience for your guests.

    Weight and Portability

The weight and portability of a Blackstone griddle are essential factors to consider for outdoor cooking enthusiasts. Models with caster wheels offer easy maneuverability and transportation.

Regarding setting up your outdoor cooking station, having a Blackstone griddle that is movable can make a world of difference. With the convenience of caster wheels, you can effortlessly glide your griddle from one spot to another without hassle. This feature enhances the overall user experience, especially for those who love hosting outdoor gatherings or tailgate parties. Portability is key when enjoying the versatility of outdoor cooking, allowing you to cook up delicious meals in various locations with ease.

Both the 28 inch model I had and my new 36 inch model have two rotating caster wheels and one set of stationary wheels so you can maneuver this thing around easily and lock it into place. Having the wheels pivot makes moving these units much easier.

    Price

The price of a Blackstone griddle varies based on the model and features included. Factors like griddle size, hood vs. hoodless, accessory rails, material quality, and additional accessories can influence the overall cost.

For instance, the Blackstone 17-inch Tabletop Griddle is priced more affordably compared to the larger Blackstone 36-inch Griddle Cooking Station due to its smaller cooking surface.

The material quality of the griddle also plays a significant role in determining the price point. Models crafted from premium stainless steel are generally more expensive than those with a powder-coated steel finish.

The inclusion of extra accessories such as a hood, side shelves, or a stand can add to the cost but enhance the grilling experience by providing convenience and versatility.

    Features and Accessories

Blackstone griddles come with a range of features and accessories that enhance the outdoor cooking experience. These include hard covers for protection, accessory racks for convenient storage, paper-towel holders, and independent heat controls for precise cooking.

One of the standout features of Blackstone griddles is their innovative cooking zones, which allow users to simultaneously cook different types of food at varying temperatures without any flavor transfer. This versatility comes in handy for those who enjoy making a variety of dishes at once or need to cater to different preferences.

Why I Upgraded to the 36-inch Blackstone Griddle

My decision to upgrade to the 36-inch Blackstone griddle was driven by the need for more cooking space, a lid to prevent rust from forming on the griddle, accessory racks, and shelfs on both sides (and underneath) of the grill for food prep.

My Experience with the 28-inch Blackstone Griddle

My experience with the 28-inch Blackstone griddle was enjoyable, but I found myself needing more cooking space and more shelving for food prep, utensil storage, paper towel storage, etc. We also had quite a bit of rust that would form on the griddle due to the lack of a lid. We did use a griddle cover and a silicon griddle mat, which helped, but did not solve the problem.  Because the unit was flat on top and concave, water would still pool on top of the cover and sit, and eventually moisture would make its way onto the cooking surface. If I had to buy the 28″ again, I would opt for the 28″ Blackstone Griddle with Hood.

While the 28-inch Blackstone griddle served its purpose well for smaller gatherings and basic outdoor meals, it definitely was stressed during large family gatherings. The limited space often meant I had to cook in batches, which was not only time-consuming but also a bit inconvenient when trying to prepare multiple dishes simultaneously.

Upon researching and exploring options, I decided that upgrading to a larger model would not only provide ample space for my cooking endeavors but also offer advanced functionalities to experiment with different cooking techniques and styles.

Benefits of the 36-inch Blackstone Griddle

The 36-inch Blackstone griddle offers numerous benefits, including expanded cooking space, independent heat zones for versatile cooking, and the ability to prepare larger quantities of food efficiently.

With its ample cooking surface area, the 36-inch Blackstone griddle provides room for multiple ingredients at once, allowing you to cook a variety of dishes simultaneously. The independent heat zones grant you the flexibility to sear meats on one side while delicately sautéing vegetables on the other, enhancing the overall meal preparation process. This griddle is perfectly designed for hosting gatherings or events, where efficiency and speed in cooking are paramount. The efficiency of this equipment has transformed the way I approach outdoor cooking, making it not only convenient but also a delightful experience.

How the Hard Top and Accessory Rack Make this the BEST Griddle

The addition of a hard top and accessory rack to my Blackstone griddle significantly enhanced my outdoor cooking experience by providing extra protection, storage convenience, and improved functionality.

The hard cover combined with the griddle cover serves as a shield against unpredictable weather conditions, ensuring that my griddle remains in top condition throughout various cooking sessions. It also prevents dust and debris from accumulating on the surface, saving me time on cleaning and maintenance.

The accessory rack was a game-changer in terms of organization; it neatly holds all my essential cooking tools within reach, eliminating the hassle of searching for them amidst the cooking frenzy. This enhances efficiency and makes the entire grilling process much smoother and enjoyable, and makes me look like the master of outdoor cooking!

Tips for Using and Maintaining a Blackstone Griddle

To make the most of your Blackstone griddle, it is essential to follow proper seasoning techniques, cleaning and maintenance routines, and utilize recommended accessories that enhance the cooking process.

    Seasoning the Griddle

Seasoning your Blackstone griddle is a crucial step to ensure optimal cooking performance and prevent rust or corrosion. It involves applying a layer of oil to the griddle plate and heating it to create a non-stick surface. I recommend using the Blackstone Seasoning oil

Before starting the seasoning process, make sure your Blackstone griddle is clean and dry. You can use a mild soap to wash the surface and a cloth to dry it thoroughly.

Once the griddle plate is clean, turn on the griddle to medium heat. Choose an oil with a high smoke point like canola or flaxseed oil for seasoning. Apply a thin, even layer of oil all over the griddle surface using a paper towel or cloth. Let the oil heat up until it starts to smoke, then turn off the griddle and allow it to cool. Repeat this process several times to build up a durable seasoning layer that will protect your griddle and enhance its cooking performance over time.”

    Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your Blackstone griddle are essential to preserve its quality and extend its lifespan. Utilize the new rear grease management system to keep the griddle clean and free from residue buildup. Just make sure to use foil liners for the grease trap for easy cleanup.

By incorporating a routine cleaning schedule into your cooking habits, you can prevent stubborn stains from forming and maintain a spotless cooking surface. When grease and food particles are left to accumulate over time, they can lead to corrosion and affect the overall flavor of your food.  If your Blackstone ever becomes Rusty, watch our YouTube video Remove Rust and Prevent It: Expert Tips for Cleaning a Rusty Blackstone.

Embracing the rear grease management system not only streamlines the cleaning process but also ensures a more hygienic environment for your culinary adventures. One thing I wish these Blackstone Griddles had was a leveling adjustment option on the legs so that we could level the unit when it rests on an uneven surface.  The grease should flow towards the back using gravity, but in some locations, such as my back patio, the ground was uneven and sloped towards the front, which meant all the grease flowed to the front.

Remember, cleaning may be a pain in the rear, but a well-maintained griddle not only cooks better but also lasts longer, making it a worthwhile investment for any cooking enthusiast.
