The Omni Homestead Resort: Family Fun & Historic Charm

The Omni Homestead Resort Front Lawn

Nestled in the rolling hills of Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, The Omni Homestead Resort is a place that feels like stepping into a storybook – and for our family, it was the perfect fall escape. With two boys full of curiosity and energy, and just two nights to pack in as much fun and relaxation as possible, we were ready for a getaway that offered something for everyone.

From the stunning scenery and family-friendly activities to the cozy, historic charm that makes you believe you are extra in Bridgerton, The Omni Homestead gave us a chance to make memories that we’ll be talking about long after the last autumn leaves have fallen.

    Location and Accessibility

Our trip kicked off with a four-hour drive from Leesburg, VA, and honestly, the drive was part of the fun. Fall was in full swing, and the scenery was straight out of a postcard—trees bursting with reds, oranges, and yellows as we wound through the mountains.

As we got closer, things started to look a little more polished, and suddenly we were driving alongside a stunning golf course that seemed to pop up out of nowhere. Immaculate greens stretched out on both sides of the road like a VIP entrance to The Omni Homestead itself. It was clear we were about to enter somewhere special, and even the boys were impressed!

The resort’s easy to spot since it takes up a good chunk of the town, with its grand brick exterior standing tall and welcoming. But getting to the actual entrance was a fun little twist—we had to loop around the back to find the formal entry. It felt a bit like a dramatic reveal, and by the time we pulled up, we were ready to jump out and start exploring. The Omni Homestead was already making a memorable first impression, even before we stepped inside!

    First Impressions and Check-In Experience

As we pulled up to the main entrance, the welcome was immediate. A few staff members headed straight over to help us unload, and they couldn’t have been friendlier! They took care of our bags, loading them onto a cart, while another team member whisked our car off to valet. It was a completely smooth process, and honestly, we felt like VIPs from the moment we parked. A heads-up for anyone planning a visit—there didn’t seem to be a self-parking option, so just plan on using the valet service. But with how seamlessly it went, we weren’t complaining.

Once inside, we headed over to the check-in desk, where we were greeted by Glenn, a guy who brought some serious enthusiasm to the front desk experience. And here’s a fun detail: Glenn looked exactly like Jeff Goldblum—so much so that we had to do a double-take! He took care of the check-in in no time, handed over a map and an activity list for the hotel, and—best surprise of all—gave us two complimentary glasses of champagne to kick off our stay. It was one of the smoothest check-ins we’ve ever had, and thanks to Glenn’s upbeat energy, we were already feeling welcomed and excited to dive into everything the resort had to offer.

    Room and Accommodation

After a quick ride up the elevator, we made our way down one of those long, wide hallways that give you a real sense of the hotel’s history. When we got to our room, we were happy to find it had two queen beds, which worked perfectly for our family setup. The entrance, however, gave us a bit of a surprise—the door opened in a direction that almost collided with one of the beds! It was a quirky layout, for sure, making for a bit of an awkward squeeze to get in. But once we were inside, the room opened up and felt spacious, with a nice blend of comfort and classic style.

The first thing that really caught my eye was the bathroom, which was both roomy and beautifully detailed. It had these intricate tile patterns, charming arches, and a large sink with enough countertop space to handle our family’s toiletries. I especially appreciated the ledge above the sink—a clever touch that added extra storage space for smaller items like contact cases and toothbrushes. All the fixtures and finishes kept with the historic charm of the hotel, making the room feel like it belonged in the resort’s unique, old-world atmosphere.

The beds turned out to be really comfortable too—a win for everyone! We were impressed with the quality of the bedding and pillows, which were plush and perfect after a full day of traveling. The kids quickly claimed the remote and found a few shows and movies to keep them entertained on the large TV, giving us a chance to settle in a bit more. And our view? It was a highlight. We overlooked the Casino building and a lovely lawn, with the mountains rising in the background. Morning light on those mountains was breathtaking and gave us an instant sense of peace. The room also had a small desk, al large walk-in closet, a handy drink tray with glasses and an ice bucket, and two bottles of water—thoughtful touches that made the room feel welcoming and ready for a family stay.

    Dining Options

The Omni Homestead Resort offers diverse dining options, from upscale meals at Jefferson’s Restaurant to casual bites at Woody’s and Jefferson’s Taproom. Martha’s Market is perfect for quick breakfasts and coffee, while afternoon tea with pastries adds a touch of elegance. Each spot highlights regional flavors and fresh ingredients, catering to a range of tastes and occasions.

    Woody’s

On our first night, we decided to try out Woody’s, which is known for its craft pizzas and gourmet sandwiches. The atmosphere was laid-back and cozy, perfect for our first evening. Megan and I kicked things off with a Woody’s Old Fashioned—smooth, well-balanced, and just the right start to unwind. For dinner, Megan and I couldn’t resist sampling a couple of their unique pizzas. We went for The Woodrow Wilson, a classic with marinara, meatballs, oregano, shaved parmesan, and fresh basil that had all the savory, comforting flavors you’d expect. But The Fringe was where things got interesting—this one had fig jam, fontina, mozzarella, gorgonzola, prosciutto, and caramelized red onion. It was a bit on the adventurous side, but every bite was an incredible mix of sweet and savory. Sharing these was a treat for both of us!

For the boys, the kids’ menu turned out to be anything but small. Charlie’s cheese pizza was just as big as ours, while Tristan’s cheeseburger was a full-sized meal that he didn’t hesitate to dive into. We wrapped things up with the Cast Iron Cookie, a warm chocolate chip cookie served in a skillet, topped with caramel and their famous Homestead Cinnamon Ice Cream. It was decadent, gooey, and one of those desserts that disappear faster than you’d like! Woody’s set the bar high for our dining experience with its delicious comfort food and family-friendly portions that left all of us satisfied and ready to explore the resort the next day.

    Martha’s Market

For a quick and easy breakfast, Martha’s Market was just perfect. We ended up eating there both mornings because it checked all the boxes—good coffee, tasty pastries, and an atmosphere that made you want to linger a little longer. The café itself was beautifully designed, with a classic black-and-white color scheme that fit right in with the hotel’s historic vibe. Right outside the café, the seating area felt warm and welcoming, flooded with natural light, and cozy with bookshelves and comfortable chairs. Both mornings, Megan and I kicked things off with large lattes, which were smooth, rich, and exactly what we needed to start the day. And then, there were the pastries—where do we even start? Our absolute favorite was the Chocolate Croissant, which came highly recommended by Glenn at the front desk. He swore it was the best he’s ever had, and honestly, he might be right!

Aside from the croissant, we tried a bit of everything. The Homestead Cinnamon Donut was a nice local twist, the quiche was savory and satisfying, and we also enjoyed a butter croissant, an Orange and Cranberry muffin, and a slice of Apple Cake. Each one was a little treat, but that chocolate croissant definitely stole the show! Martha’s Market also offered a few breakfast sandwiches, plus simpler options like cereal and oatmeal, so there was something for everyone. Not only was it a convenient option, but it was also more budget-friendly than the dining room’s breakfast buffet, making it a go-to for us during the trip. Martha’s Market had everything we needed to start our days on the right note before diving into all the activities the resort had lined up!

    Jefferson’s Taproom

For lunch, we kept it casual at Jefferson’s Taproom, which turned out to be a relaxed spot with a menu full of burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads. Megan went with the Grilled Trout Taco, and she loved it. The taco came loaded with fresh trout, shaved lettuce, and a tangy citrus and jalapeño remoulade that added just the right kick. I, on the other hand, couldn’t resist trying the Wild Game Burger, which featured camel meat that day—yes, camel! It was too unique to pass up, and I have to say, it didn’t disappoint. The camel meat was lean, kind of like ground turkey, and the burger came topped with pimento cheese, grilled onions, jalapeños, and a charred tomato aioli. Every bite was flavorful, and I devoured it in no time. The side of fruit it came with, though, was a bit underwhelming—just the usual melon mix with grapes and pineapple. Megan’s fries, however, were the real deal, seasoned perfectly and crispy on the outside.

The boys went with a mac and cheese that was a little different from the usual—it was more like pasta tossed with cheese, but they enjoyed it all the same. For drinks, I went with a classic iced tea, while Megan had an Arnold Palmer. The Taproom was a great midday stop with good food and a relaxed vibe, making it easy to recharge before heading out to explore more of the resort. And with Jefferson’s Restaurant right next door, we were already looking forward to coming back for dinner to try out their more refined menu!

    Jefferson’s Restaurant

For our final dinner, we made reservations at Jefferson’s Restaurant, the resort’s most upscale dining spot, and it was every bit the experience we hoped for. The restaurant has a polished yet welcoming vibe, with a menu that showcases top-quality regional and prime meats in a modern American grill style. Megan and I both went for the 8oz Prime Filet Mignon, which was cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Honestly, the steaks were so well-prepared that you could skip the sauce entirely, though I opted for the Béarnaise, which added just the right touch of richness. Megan tried the chimichurri, but found it a bit on the oily side and decided she’d go for the Béarnaise next time around. The steak knives they provided were impressively hefty, making it easy to slice right through that prime cut.

    Dinner at Jefferson's Restaurant

For sides, we shared two standout options: the Honey-Stung Fried Brussels Sprouts and a dish of sautéed mushrooms and onions. The Brussels sprouts were a real treat—crispy, sweet, and savory, hitting all the right notes. Paired with the earthy mushrooms and onions, our meal felt elevated but also familiar and comforting. To go with our meal, we chose a bottle of Michael Shaps Cabernet Franc, a Virginia wine from nearby Charlottesville. It was a perfect match for the filet, bringing out all those rich, savory flavors. The boys went with cheeseburgers and chicken fingers from the kids’ menu, both hits in their own right, so everyone was enjoying something.

Dessert was a showstopper. We shared both the Chocolate Lava Cake and the Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding, but the toffee pudding stole the show with its dramatic presentation. The waiter brought it out and poured caramel pecan rum sauce over the top, igniting it tableside for a little fiery flair. It was a fun moment that added a bit of theatricality to an already fantastic meal. While we enjoyed both desserts, the chocolate lava cake ultimately won us over with its gooey, chocolatey goodness. Overall, this dinner was a highlight of the trip. Though it’s the most expensive option at the resort, Jefferson’s Restaurant delivered on every level, from the quality of the food to the attentive service (our waiter even gracefully corrected me when I mistook olive oil for melted butter with our bread!). It was a memorable evening that capped off our dining experiences in the best way possible.

    Tea Service at Social Hour

One of our favorite perks at the resort was the afternoon tea service. Set up in the lobby, they offered an assortment of teas, a few pastries, and even hot cider—a big hit with our kids. The elegant atmosphere was topped off by a pianist playing softly on the grand piano, adding a touch of timeless charm. I enjoyed two cups of delicious tea while the boys sipped on cider, and it was the perfect way to wind down from the day’s activities. Our oldest, Tristan, fully embraced the experience, even saying he felt very “fancy,” which gave us all a good laugh. It was a relaxed, memorable part of the afternoon, where we could all just take a breather and soak up the cozy, elegant ambiance together.

    Amenities and Facilities

The Omni Homestead Resort offers a wide range of amenities, including the iconic Warm Springs Pool, a luxurious spa, and the family-friendly Allegheny Springs water park. Kids and adults alike can enjoy the arcade, a retro-style Theater 1923, and the 18-hole Mini Cascades mini-golf course. Together, these amenities create a perfect balance of relaxation, entertainment, and family fun.

    Pools

The Omni Homestead’s two-acre water park, Allegheny Springs, is a standout feature, fed entirely by the resort’s natural springs and packed with fun options for the whole family. Guests can zip down two thrilling 100-foot water slides, float along a relaxing 400-foot lazy river, and let kids go wild in the water play zone. There’s also a large family pool that’s perfect for everyone, plus a cozy whirlpool tucked right next to it, creating a warm, inviting space to relax. Since we visited in late October, only the heated family pool was open – the splash pad and lazy river were closed for the season. We did not get a chance to take a dip, but we walked around the pool area and checked out the hot tub.

    Spa

The Spa at The Omni Homestead is renowned for its luxurious treatments and serene atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind and rejuvenate. With a full menu of options, from soothing massages to revitalizing facials, guests can easily find a way to recharge here. The spa’s tranquil setting includes a beautiful indoor pool surrounded by loungers, cozy seating areas, and lush greenery, creating an oasis of calm tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the resort. While we didn’t have a chance to experience the spa on this trip, it’s definitely on our list for next time. The idea of indulging in a couple’s massage or simply relaxing poolside sounds like the ideal way to unwind during a stay here, and we’re already looking forward to adding it to our itinerary for our next visit.

    Mini-Golf

The Mini Cascades Miniature Golf course was a big hit with our family, and we ended up playing there twice during our stay—it quickly became one of the kids’ favorite activities. This 18-hole course, inspired by the resort’s famous Cascades Course, offered a fun and challenging experience that kept all of us entertained. The beautifully landscaped scenery added to the charm, with stunning views and lush surroundings that made each hole feel like its own little adventure. The course itself had some great features, like tunnels, ramps, and tricky rock obstacles that made every putt a little more exciting. It was the perfect spot for some friendly competition, and the kids loved every minute of it. It’s safe to say that mini golf here was one of the highlights of the trip!

    The DownTime Arcade

Our first night at the resort, we made our way to DownTime, the arcade and family game area, for some evening fun. As soon as we stepped in, we were surrounded by a lively mix of classic arcade games, pool tables, and air hockey—perfect for a family-friendly competition! The boys were immediately drawn to the air hockey table, where we had an intense family showdown. Their other favorite was the motorcycle racing game, which had them grinning from ear to ear as they raced each other. DownTime had something for everyone and was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy some lighthearted games together. It was such a fun way to kick off our stay, and I can see why guests of all ages love spending time here.

    Theater 1923

After our meal at Jefferson’s Restaurant, we decided to catch a movie at Theater 1923, a cozy and updated space that brings a touch of old-school charm to The Omni Homestead. The theater, originally built in 1923, has swapped its classic theater seats for comfortable sofas, lounge chairs, and side tables, creating a relaxed vibe that’s perfect for movie nights or special events. We settled in with the kids to watch Coco, and the retro atmosphere—complete with vintage decor and elegant touches—made the experience feel extra special. The seats were super comfortable, and the whole setup was perfect for an intimate family movie night.

While the ambiance was spot-on, the sound setup wasn’t quite as impressive. There was only a single small speaker at the front, and without surround sound, it was hard to catch every detail. The projection booth has also been transformed into a cocktail bar, but it was closed during our visit. With just us in the theater, it felt like a private screening, though I can imagine this place being a lively spot when the hotel is busier. Overall, it was a unique experience, and despite the sound system not being turned completely on, the charm of Theater 1923 made it a memorable part of our stay.

    Experiences

Our family enjoyed memorable experiences at The Omni Homestead, like the S’mores Express, complete with a tractor ride, fireside treats, and songs, and the relaxing soak at the Warm Springs Pool. While we made the most of our time, there were still plenty of activities we’d love to try next time, like a round of golf on their renowned course, the Virginia Wine Experience, horseback riding through scenic trails, and exploring the area’s beautiful hiking paths. The Homestead offers endless opportunities to connect, relax, and explore.

    The Warm Springs Pool

The Warm Springs Pool at The Omni Homestead was a truly unique and relaxing experience for our whole family. We signed up for the Family Soak, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like a special escape. The pool itself is naturally fed, with crystal-clear water that’s as inviting as it is historic. With only one other guest there, we practically had the place to ourselves, making it feel calm and serene. We did our best to keep the kids quiet, and they did a great job soaking up the tranquility of the experience. It was the kind of peaceful, mindful moment that feels like a rare treat on a family vacation.

The Warm Springs Pool is about a 15-minute shuttle ride from the main resort, adding to the feeling of a little getaway within our getaway. Once you arrive, everything is taken care of—they provide plush towels, private changing areas, and even these clever spinning machines to wring out your swimsuits before you head back. The soak itself lasts 50 minutes, which felt like the perfect amount of time to unwind in the warm, mineral-rich water. I’d highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the resort, especially for families looking for a quiet, refreshing way to spend some time together. It’s a memorable experience that captures the soothing, historic charm of The Homestead.

    The S’mores Express

The S’mores Express was an absolute hit with our family—a fun mix of adventure, sweet treats, and a bit of music to set the mood. For an hour, we rode up to the resort’s Equestrian Center on a tractor driven by Ricky, a friendly guy who made the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. Ricky not only got us up the mountain safely, but he even broke out his guitar and played a few tunes while we toasted marshmallows over a crackling fire. The kids loved the tractor ride, bouncing along the scenic path, and of course, the sugar high from the s’mores! Ricky was also kind enough to capture some great family photos at a few beautiful stops along the way, giving us some special memories to take home. It was the perfect evening activity, combining a little adventure with the cozy, nostalgic fun of s’mores by the fire.

    Service and Staff Experience

The staff at The Omni Homestead truly made our stay memorable. From the moment we arrived, every team member we encountered was friendly, professional, and went out of their way to ensure we had a great experience. Whether it was the valet, front desk, restaurant servers, or activity guides, each person brought a welcoming warmth and attention to detail that made us feel right at home. There wasn’t a single negative interaction or hiccup throughout our stay, which is rare and speaks volumes about their commitment to top-notch service. Their kindness and professionalism really added to the resort’s charm, making our time there feel special and stress-free.

    Value for Money

The Omni Homestead Resort is certainly one of the pricier stays in the region, but it offers a unique, all-in-one experience that makes it worth the splurge for those looking to treat themselves. Compared to other notable resorts like The Greenbrier in West Virginia, The Inn at Perry Cabin in Maryland, or The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, The Homestead holds its own as a premier destination with a historic ambiance, luxurious amenities, and activities that cover every season.

While it may cost more than a standard hotel, The Homestead offers an extensive range of experiences: from the iconic Warm Springs Pool and the Allegheny Springs water park to skiing, golfing, and guided historical tours, all on the stunning backdrop of the Allegheny Mountains. The Greenbrier offers a similar historic feel and high-end amenities, while The Inn at Perry Cabin focuses on waterside elegance, and The Omni Grove Park Inn delivers mountain luxury. But The Homestead stands out for its family-friendly offerings, expansive grounds, and a top-notch service team that goes the extra mile to make each stay feel special. For those willing to invest a bit more for an unforgettable, high-quality getaway, The Omni Homestead is a destination that provides impressive value through its charm, convenience, and comprehensive resort experience.

Pros and Cons of The Omni Homestead Resort

    PROS

The resort’s timeless architecture and rich history create a unique, elegant atmosphere.

With pools, a water park, spa, golf, skiing, hiking, and more, there’s something for everyone year-round.

Friendly and professional staff go above and beyond, enhancing the overall experience. Cleaning staff is great – I saw them wiping baseboards in the hallways and dusting each and every book on the bookshelf outside our room.

Plenty of options for kids, including mini golf, the arcade, and family movie nights, making it great for families.

The Warm Springs Pool offers a one-of-a-kind, relaxing soak experience that you won’t find at many other resorts.

    CONS

It’s one of the more expensive resort options in the region, which may not suit all budgets.

Maintenance is a monster for any building of this age, and there were a few issues we encountered such as an elevator being out of service and some plaster and paint that were peeling/cracked. But that is very common for any building of this age and all-in-all, they do an amazing job of maintaining this historic building.

Some rooms have unusual layouts, like doors that open awkwardly close to the bed, which can feel cramped.

Final Recommendation and Who It’s For

The Omni Homestead Resort is ideal for anyone looking to blend luxury, history, and adventure in a picturesque mountain setting. Families will find plenty to love here, with endless activities like mini golf, an arcade, and the Allegheny Springs water park to keep kids entertained, while adults can indulge in the spa, soak in the Warm Springs Pool, or savor an elegant dinner at Jefferson’s Restaurant. Couples seeking a romantic retreat will enjoy the tranquil ambiance, rich historic charm, and cozy spots throughout the property to relax and connect. With its year-round activities, friendly service, and unique features, The Homestead truly has something for everyone, from history buffs to outdoor enthusiasts.

Overall, we give it a well-deserved 4.8 out of 5 stars for delivering an exceptional, memorable experience in a one-of-a-kind setting.
